The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University welcomes applications for residential fellowships for the 2024-25 academic year, with a thematic focus on “Silence.” This fellowship program offers an enriching experience for up to six scholars and artists. Each Society Fellow will receive a $60,000 stipend.
Host Institutions: Cornell University
Duration: One year, from August through July.
Fellowship Community:
Fellows encompass scholars and practitioners from various institutions and Cornell faculty members excused from regular duties.
The fellowship year is marked by collaboration, with fellows engaging with each other and the Taylor Family Director of the Society, Paul Fleming.
Fellows dedicate their time to research and writing during their residency.
Active participation in a weekly Fellows Seminar is mandatory, where they workshop each other’s projects and engage in readings based on the annual theme.
Social and Communal Experience:
Fellows embrace a social and communal atmosphere. They bond outside of academic settings, sharing meals following the weekly seminar and attending post-lecture receptions and casual events throughout the year.
Fellows live and work in Ithaca, NY, and are expected to be frequently present on campus.
A commitment to fostering a supportive and intellectually stimulating community is essential for all applicants.
Teaching Opportunity:
Fellows conduct one small seminar tailored for graduate students and advanced undergraduates during their fellowship year.
Courses should align with the thematic focus but offer flexibility in content and teaching approach, accommodating ongoing research interests.
