The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) extends its invitation to exceptional non-EEA/non-EFTA students who are enrolling in a full-time master’s degree programme at Leiden University.

Leiden University in The Netherlands.
Level/Field of Study:
All full-time Masters programmes at Leiden University, with the exception of:
Leiden Law School’s LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programmes
Study programmes commencing in February at the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Sciences, and Leiden Law School.
Number of Awards:
The number and type of scholarships depend on the budget allocated to each Faculty department.
Target Group:
Non-EEA/non-EFTA* nationals; all nationalities for certain courses (see below)
Scholarship Value/Duration:
The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme offers three award tiers:
•€10,000 of the tuition fee
•€15,000 of the tuition fee
•Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee
Please note that the LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients are still required to provide ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must have demonstrated outstanding academic performance in their previous education, directly relevant to the Master’s programme they are applying for. As a guideline, the student should rank among the top 10% of graduates in their previous study programme. It’s important to note that proof of ranking is not mandatory; this information serves solely to indicate the level of competitiveness.
Candidates must hold a non non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and should not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering) – except for students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programmes or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, for which no nationality restrictions apply.

Application Instructions:
- Begin by applying online for admission to a Master’s programme at Leiden University.
- Once you’ve completed the admissions process, if you are eligible to apply for the LExS, it will become visible in the scholarships section of the online application system.
- Clearly indicate your interest in the LExS scholarship and upload your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship.
- For programmes starting in September, the deadline is 1 February, while programmes starting in February have a deadline of 1 October.
