The Virginia Institute of Marine Science invites dedicated individuals for Fully Funded Degree Scholarships in the realm of marine research. This unparalleled opportunity delves into the intricate ways fishes navigate various stressors, encompassing molecular-level analyses to comprehensive studies of the whole organism. Additionally, it explores the translation of lab-based experiments to real-world scenarios in the field.
Potential Research Avenues Include:
•Species across trophic levels – Understanding climate change impact on top predators.
•Invasive species – Exploring the resilience of blue catfish in the face of environmental changes.
•Endangered and vulnerable species – Investigating how at-risk species.
Selected students will immerse themselves in aquatic husbandry, experimental design, molecular and biochemical techniques, as well as whole-animal methodologies such as respirometry. Fieldwork, including fish and sample collections, is also a distinct possibility. Moreover, participants will acquire versatile skills in R programming, project management, and science communication, encompassing writing, public speaking, and teaching.
