Scholarship Requirements:
To be eligible for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Scholarship Programme, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Required Languages: English / German
- Eligible Countries: Gifted students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe
- The candidates should show exceptional promise for an academic or professional career.
- Admission or enrolment at a state or state-recognized higher-education institution in Germany.
- Adequate knowledge of German, even though courses are conducted in English. This requires a ‘Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang’ of at least DSH level 2, a ‘Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache’ of at least level 4, or a ‘Zertifikat C 1’ from a Goethe Institute.
- Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to the values of social democracy.
- Above-average academic performance in school and previous studies.
- Desired qualities in applicants include political thinking, thirst for knowledge, tolerance, and openness, team orientation, critical thinking, and self-reflection.
Scholarship Duration and Reward:
Foreign scholarship holders receive:
- 934 € per month (basic scholarship programme) / 1.200 € per month (graduate scholarship programme).
- 276 € of family allowance, if applicable.
- Refund of health care costs.
- Any income exceeding 400 € per month will be credited against the scholarship.
Expectations:
FES expects scholarship holders:
- To actively participate in extra-curricular seminars and activities organized by FES campus groups.
- Achieve above-average results in their degree courses.
- To continue and intensify their socio-political commitment.
Note:
The FES supports all academic subjects and students from public or state-approved universities and universities of applied sciences/polytechnical colleges (FH), as well as postgraduate programmes (PhD).
The FES does not support second degree courses, study visits outside Germany, or final phases of academic studies in postgraduate courses in medicine.

Self-application: Use the “Online-Bewerbung” on the Internet – please note that the application process is in German.
Individual interviews: Selected candidates will be invited to two individual interviews conducted by FES lecturers and scholarship committee members.
Discussion and final decision by the AWA: The AWA will make the final decision about your application.
Written notification: You will be notified of the AWA’s decision.
