PhD Research Opportunity in Applied Geochemistry at Luleå University –The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Natural Resources Engineering at Luleå University of Technology is seeking a dedicated PhD student to join the research field of Applied Geochemistry.
This area encompasses analytical chemistry, isotope geochemistry, environmental forensics, and environmental mineralogy, with a specific emphasis on sustainable mining practices. The selected candidate will be engaged in a project evaluating the geochemical stability of concrete composed of mine waste.
Subject Description:
Applied Geochemistry investigates the presence and mobility of chemical elements in the environment, with a primary focus on developing methods to mitigate the environmental impact of mining activities.
Project Description:
This collaborative project, involving Building Materials at Luleå University of Technology, SWERIM, and IVL, aims to assess the geochemical stability of concrete incorporating waste materials, predominantly sourced from the mining sector. Variations in waste composition and properties may influence the geochemical stability of the concrete. The project entails waste and concrete characterization, as well as leaching tests conducted in controlled climate chambers and real-world field conditions.
Duties:
As a PhD student, you will be responsible for both experimental and theoretical work. This includes presenting your findings at national and international conferences, publishing in scientific journals, and engaging with stakeholders and project partners. Planning and conducting fieldwork and laboratory experiments in collaboration with colleagues and external partners is integral to the role. Effective communication of your work, both verbally and in writing, is a crucial aspect. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to refine your teaching skills.
Eligibility:
- Candidates must hold a master’s degree in Geosciences, Natural Resources Engineering, Environmental Science, or possess equivalent qualifications. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is essential.
In addition to strong academic performance in relevant subjects during your undergraduate studies, the following criteria will be considered for the position:
- Knowledge and experience in the mining sector
- Proficiency in mineralogy with a solid grasp of associated skills
- Experience with fieldwork in environmental geochemistry
- Proficiency in Swedish, both spoken and written.
