The UAPS African Research and Data Fellowship aims to build the capacity of early career researchers (ECRs) in Africa to undertake and disseminate research in population and development issues.
The Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) contribute to producing a critical mass of highly skilled, locally-trained scholars in research and policy engagement across Africa, a cohort of 20 ECRs will be selected in 2023.

Requirements:
To be considered for the UAPS African Research and Data Fellowship:
- African citizenship and permanent residence in any African country.
- Doctoral Candidates conducting research on population and development issues in Africa, including Family Planning (FP), Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Gender Equality.
- Paid up UAPS member.
- Female applicants, including those who have had a career break can also apply.
Duration and Reward:
- Training in research design, methods, data collection and analysis, scientific writing, grant writing, publishing, and mathematical modeling.
- Grant of up to $2,000 for an approved research project on FP and/or SRHR and gender equality issues in Africa.
- Networking and mentorship connections in research institutions.
- Opportunity to participate in the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) internship program.
- Assistance on paper submissions to conferences and relevant seminars.
Required Documents:
Candidates must submit the following documents:
- Proof of citizenship or permanent residence in Africa.
- Motivation letter.
- Up-to-date resume.
- Two recommendation letters with referees’ contact details.
- Up to 3 pages concept note of the proposed research project.
- Budget and its narrative.
- Fully completed application form in English or French, available on the UAPS website.
Method of Application:
Compile all required documents into one PDF titled with the candidate’s surname followed by “AfRes-Data Fellowship application” and submit it via the fellowship’s website.
