The Buchholtz Lab at Clemson University, in collaboration with the USGS South Carolina Cooperative Wildlife & Fisheries Research Unit, is recruiting a Ph.D. student for a research project in the Clemson University Forestry & Environmental Conservation Department. The project focuses on red wolf movement ecology in their North Carolina range, utilizing modeling and GIS to understand the socio-environmental landscape. The selected student will work on agent-based models to inform the USFWS Red Wolf Recovery Program.
The Ph.D. student will develop agent-based models to explore how red wolves navigate the heterogeneous landscape of risks and resources in their current range. The research aims to inform USFWS translocation and management actions. The position is modeling-based, utilizing existing data and ABMs. Please note that direct involvement in collaring or translocating red wolves is not part of this position.
Funding:
The assistantship covers a tuition waiver and a 12-month stipend (~$30,000) with guaranteed funding for 3 years pending federal budgets. Subsequent years will be funded through internal and/or external opportunities, with support provided for securing these funds. The student will also have a budget for conference travel, supplies, and research.
Eligibility:
- Master’s degree in ecology, conservation biology, geography, or related fields.
- Experience with animal movement models and/or agent-based models.
- Strong GIS skills preferred.
