The University of Galway offers two PhD Scholarships in Food Microbiology in Ireland as part of the DETCON project: Detection and Control of Listeria monocytogenes in food production. The scholarships, Walsh Scholarship Refs. 2023260 and 2023258, address the growing challenge posed by Listeria monocytogenes, an organism responsible for potentially fatal foodborne infections like listeriosis, which have been increasing in Europe in recent years.
The DETCON project, funded by DAFM, aims to identify persistent and virulent strains of L. monocytogenes to mitigate health risks and provide innovative solutions. The project will also assess the impact of exposure to treatments on L. monocytogenes’ response to environmental stressors.
Requirements:
Applicants should have a 1H or 2H1 B.Sc. degree in an appropriate discipline (Microbiology, Food Science, or similar). Experience in handling pathogenic microorganisms would be advantageous.
